Title | Duplicitous Actions: American Involvement in the Indonesian Invasion of East Timor |
GAC Student Author | Cusak, Carl S. |
Description | This thesis examines the impact of US. involvement in the Indonesian invasion of East Timor (1975-1976) through US Department of State documents, US National Security Agency documents, Presidential communications from three US. Presidential administrations, and six excellent secondary sources (five books and one scholarly article). There is a dearth of historical scholarship regarding the relationship between the United States and states located in the Malay Archipelago during the period of 1945-1980, likely because of the overwhelming impact of the American War in Vietnam. This thesis will attempt, in a finite way, to resolve this deficit in our understanding of US. foreign policy. This thesis will argue that the United States' actions in supporting the Indonesian invasion of East Timor was unnecessary in terms of their interests in Southeast Asia, costly to the East Timorese, and based on a flawed understanding of the East Timorese people. It is essential to understand American involvement's impact on the Indonesian invasion of East Timor as an example of continuity in US. foreign policy, and as warning of how easily officials in the State Department and other large bureaucracies can lose sight of the importance of democratic processes and the right to self-determination of other nations. |
