This photograph was taken while on safari in the national park. We had just begun our journey, when as soon as we pulled onto the path, a herd of elephants surrounded us. This dominant female of the group flared her ears, stomped her feet, and decided not to move from the middle of the road. It was as if she was saying “this is my territory.” Our safari guide told us she was trying to scare us away in order to protect her babies and her herd. We sat watching, amazed, as the female was trying to decide if she should charge our vehicle or not. After 20 minutes of confrontation and “fake” charges, she finally backed down and let us pass.
